A brain injury is a complex injury which can exhibit an array of symptoms. Early treatment and rehabilitation are crucial when a brain injury has been sustained to ensure that the best long-term recovery can be achieved.

In most cases, immediate medical advice and care must be sought. This can be done in several ways: calling your GP or NHS 111, attending accident and emergency or calling 999.

Understanding and recognising signs of a potential brain injury can assist early diagnosis as you can advise the medical professionals of any symptoms that you, or someone else, are experiencing.

The symptoms may include, but are not limited to, the following:

The physical symptoms of a brain injury

  • a headache that gets worse over time
  • sudden light sensitivity
  • unusual nausea
  • dizziness and vomiting
  • loss of balance
  • blurred vision or other unusual vision problems
  • seizures or convulsions
  • any loss of consciousness, even if it is for only for a very short period of time
  • difficulty with speech/unusual or slurred speech
  • clear fluid coming from their ears and/or nose

Potential cognitive changes of a brain injury

  • seeming confused and/or disorientated
  • issues with memory or with concentration
  • slowness with thought pattern
  • difficulty making decisions
  • the person seems different in themselves

Sensory issues

  • sudden uncoordinated limbs
  • ringing in one or both ears
  • metallic taste in mouth
  • numbness/tingling/weakness in any part of the body

Emotional and behavioural changes

  • sudden anger outbursts
  • more irritable than usual
  • more tearful and emotional than usual
  • mood swings
  • change in personality

Changes in sleep pattern

  • becoming very drowsy
  • difficult to wake up when asleep
  • needing to sleep far more or far less than usual

Many brain injury symptoms can become evident either immediately or fairly soon after an injury has occurred, whereas some develop over the long term so it is always advisable to seek immediate medical advice and attention.
