In recent years, there has been increasing discussion about whether menopause and perimenopause can contribute to relationship difficulties, marriage problems and even divorce. Whilst menopause itself does not directly cause divorce, many women report that the physical and emotional effects of menopause can place pressure on relationships and lead to a reassessment of long-term partnerships. There is now far greater awareness and understanding of menopause and perimenopause which is undoubtedly a positive development. Women are increasingly encouraged to discuss symptoms openly, seek support and better understand the physical and emotional changes they may experience. As a result, there is also greater discussion about the impact these changes can have on wider aspects of life, including relationships and marriage. How menopause affects relationships, communication and marriage Menopause and perimenopause can affect people in very different ways, but for some women, the physical and emotional changes experienced during this stage of life can place additional strain on relationships. Symptoms can include: emotional withdrawal loss of intimacy reduced libido communication issues sleep deprivation mood changes Whilst these challenges do not inevitably lead to separation or divorce, they can affect communication, connection and overall relationship satisfaction if left unaddressed. As Sally Sidani-Wilkinson, Health Coach and Menopause Wellbeing Practitioner at Re-Balance by Sally, explains: I see first-hand how profoundly menopause can affect every aspect of a woman’s life, including their closest relationships. The physical symptoms are often only part of the picture; disrupted sleep, anxiety, loss of confidence and feeling unlike yourself can make communication and emotional connection much harder. Whilst menopause doesn’t cause relationship breakdown, it can highlight feelings and needs that have gone unheard for years. With the right support, many women gain greater understanding of themselves, have more open conversations with their partners, and make decisions from a place of clarity rather than overwhelm. Why menopause can trigger relationship reassessment in midlife For some women, midlife can be a period of reflection. Children may have grown up, careers may be more established and there may be greater financial independence than earlier in life. Against that backdrop, menopause may coincide with a reassessment of priorities, personal fulfilment and future goals. Long-standing difficulties within a relationship that may previously have been tolerated, can come under closer scrutiny as individuals consider what they want from the next stage of their lives. Divorce is rarely the result of a single factor and relationship breakdown is usually the culmination of a range of circumstances developing over time. Grey divorce and later-life separation: legal considerations From a family law perspective, divorce later in life can present particular challenges. Couples often have substantial assets, including pensions, property, investments and business interests. There may also be concerns regarding retirement planning and how each party will meet their future housing and income needs. Supporting employees through menopause and life transitions At Morr & Co, we recognise the importance of creating space for these conversations. As part of our commitment to supporting clients through all aspects of life change, we have recently hosted a series of menopause wellbeing seminars, presented by Sally Sidani-Wilkinson for our staff to attend where they gain valuable insights around the physical, emotional and practical impact of perimenopause and menopause. We are also launching an internal Menopause Café, which will provide an informal and supportive environment where members of staff can drop in to talk openly about menopause, share experiences, discuss symptoms and challenges and learn more about the support available. These conversations can play an important role in helping individuals feel heard, understood and better equipped to navigate what can be a significant life transition. Menopause, divorce and looking ahead with confidence Whilst menopause does not cause divorce, the physical, emotional and psychological changes associated with perimenopause and menopause can affect relationships in significant ways. Many couples will successfully navigate these challenges together, whilst others may decide that separation or divorce is the right path forward.
